Brian Zimmerman was born in Washington, DC, in 1950, the
son of an Army physician. He grew up in Maryland where he
graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in
Microbiology, before entering the Army for a career as a
Clinical Laboratory Officer and board-certified medical
technologist. He holds two Masters degrees, in management and
in medical technology.
Although he has no formal training in the visual arts,
Brian enjoyed 35mm film photography for many years as a hobby
and learned traditional darkroom skills while working in
medical research, where some of his black and white
photomicrographs were published in medical journals. After
retiring from the Army and completing his fourth college
degree, in electronics, Brian soon discovered digital
photography and his passion for photography was born again.
After honing his skills through self study and winning in a
number of local and internet-based photo contests, including
several hundred "photos of the day", he began
shooting commercially and registered his "B-L-Z
Photos" photography business in Chesterfield County,
Virginia. Now in his third year as a professional freelance
photographer, Brian enjoys shooting a variety of subject
matter, including sports photography, portraits, wildlife,
still life, scenics, and various commercial assignments for
stock photo companies.
His photos have been displayed in the Virginia State
Assembly Building, in Richmond movie theaters, and published
in state and federal magazines. Brian's images have also been
licensed for display in various electronic and print media by
international business clients, including Adobe, and have
appeared in promotional materials for the Richmond Kickers
professional soccer team. He also designed and produced the
current brochure for the Metro Richmond Zoo, which features
his original animal photos shot on location. A digital
photography book and soccer book to be published soon in
England and the Netherlands, respectively, will include some
of Brian's work. Four of Brian's scenic/nature photos won top
honors in the state's 2004 Virginia Wildlife Photography
Contest and will appear in the March, 2005, Annual Photography
Contest Showcase issue of the Virginia Wildlife magazine.
Brian loves to be outdoors shooting nature, but also shoots
a lot of soccer action, both at pro matches
